biscuit gallery karuizawa is pleased to announce a solo exhibition by Ryo Shinagawa, starting July 6, 2024, to commemorate the gallery’s 1st anniversary.
A talk event will be held to commemorate the exhibition on Saturday, July 6, 2024, the first day of the exhibition.
Ryo Shinagawa will be joined by Tadashi Kobayashi, a Japanese art historian also known as “Kobachū Sensei,” to discuss Japanese art and painting from ukiyo-e to the present day. The moderator for this event will be Teiya Iwabuchi, editor-in-chief of Bijutsu Techo.

Participant Profile
Ryo Shinagawa
The painter. Born in 1987 in Osaka.
He is based in Kyoto. While reconsidering the painting and cultural history of the East, he takes on the challenge of expanding the possibilities of new painting in the modern era. While developing a wide range of artistic expression, from traditional genres such as hanging scrolls and fusuma door paintings to modern architectural spaces, my work is centered on the question: “What is painting?”
Major solo exhibitions include “Re:Action” (Fukuda Art Museum panorama gallery / Kyoto), “RYO SHINAGAWA” (Eslite Gallery / Taipei), “LANDSCAPE” (OIL by Bijutsu Techo gallery / Tokyo), etc. He also produces works for temples and companies such as Kenninji temple Ryosoku-in, Tenreizan Shorin-in, Tiger Vacuum Bottle Co., Ltd. (Osaka), and Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (Tokyo).

Tadashi Kobayashi
Born in Tokyo in 1941. Completed a master’s course at the University of Tokyo Graduate School. Previously held positions including member of the painting department at the Tokyo National Museum, assistant professor at Nagoya University, professor at the Faculty of Letters at Gakushuin University, and director of the Chiba City Museum of Art. Currently, he is professor emeritus at Gakushuin University, director of the Okada Museum of Art, advisor to Kokkasha, and honorary chairman of the International Ukiyo-e Society. A recipient of the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.
His major works include “Edo Kaiga Shiron” (Suntory Academic Prize), “Reading Edo Ukiyo-e” (Chikuma Shinsho), “Ito Jakuchu” (Shincho Japanese Art Library), “The Complete History of Japanese Ink Painting” (Kodansha Academic Library), and “Korin, Drawing Fuji!” (Shogakukan).
Moderator Profile
Teiya Iwabuchi
Editor-in-chief of Bijutsu Techo. Born in 1975. Graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Keio University in 1999. Became editor-in-chief in 2008, and has held his current position since 2019. Launched the online version of Bijutsu Techo and the art e-commerce site OIL by Bijutsu Techo. In addition, he is involved in the art scene in a wide range of situations, including serving as a judge for public exhibitions and appearing in talk events.
